Al Green

After the early disappearances of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye,
Al Green is certainly the last great male voice of Soul.
He has unfortunately deserted the Soul scene in the last 20 years,
having chosen to focus almost exclusively on religion and Gospel.

Al Green

Born April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas, Al Greene (he will give up the final "e" of his name at the beginning of his solo career) comes from a very religious family of ten children. At the age of 9, he toured with the Gospel vocal quartet with his three brothers, first in their native south and then in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan when the Green family moved there. at the end of the 50's.
His participation ceases abruptly when his father turns him out of the band, after catching him listening to a Jackie Wilson song ...

At 16, he and his classmates Curtis Rogers and Palmer Jones join a group of R & B's, Al Greene And Soul Mates. The group even got a small hit with the Back Up Train title in 1968, shortly before Al Greene decided to go it alone, under the shortened name of Al Green.

Back Up Train

The young singer made a decisive encounter at a 1969 concert for his career, in the person of Willie Mitchell. The producer of Memphis, who has just launched Ann Peebles, is fooled by the talent of Al Green and takes him under contract at Hi Records. The first album is called Green is Blues and comes out early 1970.

It's with the next album, Al Green Gets Next To You , that the first success comes: Tired Of Being Alonemakes honorable scores in the US and English charts, and becomes gold record. The first number one is obtained by the song Let's Stay Together in 1972, while the album of the same name also ranks very well.

For two years, several other hits follow, Look What You Done For Me and I'm Still In Love With You still in 1972, Call Me in 1973, then Here I Am and Sha-la-la (Make Me Happy) ...

Tired Of Being Alone

Let's stay together

Look What You Done For Me

I'm still in love with you

call me

Here I Am

Sha-La-La (Make Happy)

On October 18, 1974, a serious and far-reaching event will change the fate of Al Green. While he is in his bath, Mary Woodson, his girlfriend of the moment to whom he had just refused marriage, poured on him a pan full of boiling corn gruel, which causes him serious burns that will require his hospitalization during 11 days. In the minutes following her gesture, she kills herself with the 38 caliber belonging to the singer. Al Green sees in this tragedy a divine warning, and then decides to get involved more and more in the religion, until buying in April 1976 a church in Memphis and being ordered pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle.

For a few more years, his spiritual quest and Soul singer career coexisted. He recorded three more albums with Willie Mitchell, Al Green Is Love  in 1975, Full Of Fire and Have A Good Time in 1976.
After two last hits, LOVE and Full Of Fire , sales are starting to decline under the influence of the disco wave ...

Full Of Fire

He stopped working with Mitchell and set up his own studio, American Music. The first film released in 1977 is The Belle Album, a relative failure, despite Belle's success The following year, the album Truth And Time suffered the same fate.

Another "divine" event will again affect Al Green's fate in 1979. At a concert in Cincinnati, he seriously injured himself by falling off the stage, which earned him another 15 days in hospital. Seeing a new sign of God, he decides this time to stop singing "profane" music to devote himself entirely to his mission of preaching. The Lord Will Make A Way is the first of a series of Gospel albums (including one made in 85 by Willie Mitchell, He Is The Light ).

It is only with the album Do not Look Back that finally makes a return to the Soul Music in 1992, after 15 years of absence, it leaves only in England, but its contents is included in 95 in the next album, Your Heart's Good Hands , which is also released in the USA where it is well received. At the same time, the success of Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" allows many to discover Al Green, thanks to the presence of Let's Stay Together  in the background of one of the scenes. It was also in 1995 that Al Green returned to the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame ...

Currently, Al Green still occasionally performs in concerts around the world, when his religious function allows him however leis leisure ...
Al Green 04

He released in November 2003 a new album, I Can not Stop , which marks his reunion with Willie Mitchell for the first time in more than 25 years. He is surrounded by the entire Royal Studio's historic team, including the Hodges brothers. The result, without equaling the albums of his great time Hi, is however quite worthy of interest.
